The answers are very illuminating of the thought process.

The epigraph in Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge came from the same source as Adnan's - the Katha Upanishad, originally rendered in Sanskrit.

In Maugham's work, again in the backdrop of the war, Larry weaves his way to parts of India where the epigraph would shed its meaning and allow for a peek into its essence.

I sometimes feel that it's in the peace after the war that the soul endures its toughest tortures yet.

And it's possibly this that poses the toughest challenge to the writer.

It's like nearing a bend that hides the expected, and yet surprises one upon rounding it. As with so many wars, they seem so far away and happen to people we like to imagine are different from us because that difference comforts us and blindfolds us into believing we are safe from such events.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I'm sure you'll find the book rewarding.Rachel Fentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10046917627054462214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3573472801176728225.post-84939713275567067102010-08-09T10:20:51.999-07:002010-08-09T10:20:51.999-07:00What a disturbing, compelling interview. Some of the passages discussed here actually reminded me of my life in Romania in the same period (at least the thing with the bribes, the watching of American shows, the cultural references that pop-up in writing everywhere). So many similarities, although of course, we did not have the atrocities happening, and although they happened so close, somehow they seemed very far away, which is something I feel guilt and puzzlement about now. Of course we knew of it, but felt mostly disconnected. In Romania the religious field is mostly flat and not many minarets of other religions stand up from the ground to remind us that there are many different people out there and we are not the keepers of the ultimate truth. Which is good and bad, very bad. It's always been kind of peaceful, but then you don't know what would happen when confronted with a situation where we would have to prove tolerance and compassion. See, it all hit home with me.

Anyway, the interview really drew me to the novel. I think you must be a writer's dream, Rachel. Although the writer also needs to be brave (and possess quite a few other qualities) to go through an interview with you. Thank you to both of you. It was a pleasure to read.Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17708851895104018255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3573472801176728225.post-15095979228995514562010-08-08T16:42:03.040-07:002010-08-08T16:42:03.040-07:00Thanks.Thanks.Rachel Fentonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10046917627054462214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3573472801176728225.post-38124111223232837392010-08-08T16:04:04.244-07:002010-08-08T16:04:04.244-07:00Really interesting interview.
