I totally misread this the first time (and probably the second and third too): 'rocks like toast'? In what way does toast rock? Sorry, I've only had an hour and a half's sleep - I probably shouldn't be reading anything let alone poetry.
Beside the seaside, aside the sea! You weren't meant to notice this, Jim, and I was going to trundle it back off to bed before anyone saw it or commented! But now you have pinned it here with your sleep deprived ramblings! :) I sympathise..I don't sleep so well myself..rocks like toast are the volcanic pumice stone type, not those great lumps of shiny Scottish granite...I live, essentially, on a volcano...you should come visit me in NZ - you'd love it here!
Hm, so even what I really thought you meant, i.e., rocks as hot as toast, wasn't right. I get it now. I'm sure I would love New Zealand but you needn't worry about me turning up on your doorstep any time soon. I'm not much of a traveller. I can talk myself out of a bus trip into the city very easily. As for my sleep pattern, I don't really have one, but do have definite nocturnal tendencies.
I struggle to drop off as that's the time I get most of my ideas. I keep notebooks by the bed but sometimes end up sitting and writing a whole story/poem, rather than just the idea for it. My son woke every three hours for the first 6 months and I've struggled to break that waking pattern for myself. I only ever seem to be able to sleep in the mornings, after everyone else is up! I get up to an hour and a half then, or a bit more at weekends!
I used to keep a dream diary, too, so am used to sitting up jotting something in the dark now.
If I could switch off my thoughts...
...hope you get some zeds tonight! No more toast - promise!
