Lane Ashfeldt, author of SaltWater, has interviewed me about what it means to me to have won the "7th Annual Short FICTION Competition", among some other very interesting questions. Read my answers here.
Great interview - thoughtful questions and interesting answers, particularly about acquiring a nationality. I'm in the same boat! Congrats again Rae! xxcat
Although I have not read your fiction yet, I think I will like it if this interview is anything to go by. I like your thoughts on citizenship. Having relocated from Cuba to the UK almost 16 years ago I feel in a similar vein to you, although for me London is home now. So, when I go back to Havana where I was born and where I grew up, I now say that I'm going home from home.:-)
"Hopefully, there are publishers and agents out there noticing. I might have to – cough, cough – mention it in my query letters!"
And this was profound:
"But more than land – which is just the thing we stand on – I care about people, and I don’t make distinctions about who to care for based on geography."
Thanks for noticing those lines, Jamez, reminding me of something Adnan Mahmutovic wrote in an interview: http://snowlikethought.blogspot.co.nz/2010/08/forgetting.html
"A reader is not just some sponge that suck in whatever is served to her or him, but always partly a co-author of meanings and ideas in any work."
Very thought provoking. I particularly liked "For me, art has always been a way of thinking and working through ideas before I’m able to articulate them in words."

ReplyDeleteThanks, Cat! I could have rambled on and on about my thoughts on that question! Thank you!

ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Hullo, Cuban - welcome! And thank you.
ReplyDeleteI would like to visit Cuba. Trivia: Paolo Nutini's music video to the song "Candy" was filmed there.
Home from home is a nice way of looking at it. I'm going to think on that some more.
Hope my fiction doesn't disappoint you.
Kindest, from Auckland.
I thought this was cute:

Nice to see the good getting great!

I'm lucky to have found a great reader in you!

ReplyDeleteThanks for reading, Dominic.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Rachel. This is so wonderful. It's amazing what you can accomplish with talent and hard work. Interesting interview.
ReplyDeleteKass, thank you! Hard work trumps talent, I think!
ReplyDelete...and, by the way, that is the coolest profile shot ever.
ReplyDeleteHa! Thank you, Kass :)
