I was on Radio NZ, or Raedio, as my Three Words co-editor Indira Neville put it, to talk to Justin Gregory about taking graphic poetry to Auckland Writers Festival, and humans.

Two happy

I'm very grateful to Felino A. Soriano for including my fictions "The Thirsty Dog" and "Dog Lying in the Snow" in Sugar Mule #47, and doubly happy to see writer and lit-hop pals Ezra Letra and Jamez Chang in this issue, too - check out their three poems - powerful stuff.

Tech tonic

I'm grateful to Mojave River Review for publishing "Two Continents", another poem from my collaboration with multi-talented editor, writer and lit-hop artist Jamez Chang.

This poem is about what can happen when people on opposite sides of the world communicate via technology.

An ending

Sincere thanks to the editors of Ishaan Literary Review for including the final collaborative poem, "Poem in the Stern Imperative", from the series Jamez Chang and I began writing this time last year.

Our collaboration has come full circle. I've learnt so much from Jamez, I'm seriously pleased our paths on the world wide net crossed.

PANK s, plural

A while ago, Jamez Chang and I collaborated on some poetry. Jamez is already a talented hip-hop artist and poet, so I was excited to find out how our respective literary styles would compliment each other. Jamez made recordings of us reading the poems and they feature, along with the text of the poetry, in PANK.

I know it's not cool to shout your own praises, but what Jamez has done, along with a track from Beatsmith Medore, is superb! Well worth a minute of your time, if you can lend us your ears.

Having handed over the Artist in Residence baton to Yvel Clovis, over at Counterexample Poetics, I wanted to take a moment to appreciate his work - it's always good for a writer or artist to maintain a connection to the places they've had work appear -  and I'd be grateful if you could take a moment with me.

Yvel says this:

"I love art.  As a Haitian-American photographer, I enjoy meeting new people and having the ability to take a moment from their lives and turn it into a STORY that will last forever."

Really pleased with the way my art turned out in the latest issue of Counterexample Poetics. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time as Artist in Residence there and working with Justis Mills and Pamela Hill has been a joy. Their collaborative piece was inspirational to the extreme - thanks, Justis and Pamela!

My sincere thanks to Flash Fiction and Art Editor, Jamez Chang, for letting me run with this piece when all I gave him for "plans" were three scrawled sketches in a notepad!

So far, I've had the privilege of getting an early peek at the flash fiction of the wonderfully talented Meg Pokrass and Grant Faulkner, and I'm currently working on art inspired by the collaborative fiction of equally talented Justis Mills and Pamela Hill.

Fall alright

Had a few bits of good fortune befall me this winter. Firstly: connecting with Jamez Chang, hip-hop (hurray) performer, artist and writer, and editor of flash fiction at Counterexample Poetics. Here's a piece of his bio:

"Jamez Chang is a poet, writer, lawyer, and former hip-hop artist living in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. After graduating from Bard College, Jamez went on to become the first Korean-American to release a hip-hop album, Z-Bonics (F.O.B. Productions, 1998), in the United States. He also composed the soundtrack to the documentary The #7 Train: An Immigrant Journey."

I'm delighted to be collaborating with Jamez on a project this month - watch this space.


Second bit of good news: I made the shortlist (second year running) of the University of Plymouth Short Fiction Competiton. I'm completely stoked about this as it's a tough comp from a brilliant journal - the shortlist always contains the very best of contemporary fiction - and I'm proud to have my name on the list again. Fingers crossed - winner announced in August.

Finally: last night I went to the launch of Sarah Laing's latest novel, The Fall of Light. I'm only a couple of chapters in (and enjoying muchly), but I recommend reading her work (she does awesome comics, too), and hopefully I can tempt you to buy her book with a comic scene from her launch.
